The iPhone Hidden collection is locked by default on iOS 16 and later. Open Hidden under Photos Utilities and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID. Photos does not provide a separate Hidden-album password. If you need a different code, use a separate vault and verify its recovery and deletion rules first.
Hidden is locked by default on current iOS
Apple locks the Hidden and Recently Deleted collections by default on iOS 16 and later. The hidden items remain part of the Photos library, but opening the collection requires the authentication available on the device.
Hiding also removes an item from the Library, ordinary albums, and the Photos widget. It does not move the item into an unrelated storage system. Apple documents both behaviors in its current Hidden album guide.
Test the lock and album visibility
- Open Photos and scroll to Utilities.
- Tap Hidden.
- Confirm that Photos asks for Face ID or Touch ID before displaying the collection.
- Close Photos, reopen it, and test again if you changed a related setting.
If you do not want Hidden to appear in Photos, open Settings → Apps → Photos and turn off Show Hidden Album. This removes the collection from view. It does not create a second password or move the content out of Photos.
A different password requires a separate vault
Photos does not expose a separate password for the Hidden collection. It uses the iPhone authentication system. That is convenient when the person using the phone should also be able to open Hidden, but it does not create an independent secret.
A separate photo vault app for iPhone can provide another access flow. Calculator Lock uses a visible Private Vault button, a separate vault code, and optional biometric confirmation. The product stores its private content in an encrypted local vault rather than inside the Photos Hidden collection.

Calculator Lock requires Premium to add new vault content. If Premium ends, existing encrypted vault data remains accessible, organizable, recoverable, exportable, and deletable. Protect the only good copy
- Import a nonessential sample first.
- Open the copied photo and play copied videos.
- Confirm the recovery and export path while access is active.
- Keep the Photos original until the new copy has passed those checks.
Deleting Calculator Lock can permanently remove its local vault, and a recovery key cannot restore an uninstalled vault. Use the safe photo move workflow before deleting anything from Photos.
